On the weekend of 9th/ 10th February, a group of 16 Year 10 and 11 GCSE PE pupils embarked on their trip to Storey Arms situated in the Brecon Beacons. The purpose of the trip was to complete a course of mountain walking and trekking. Mountain walking is a recognised individual sporting activity that pupils can put towards their final GCSE practical grade.
During the course of the weekend, the pupils were able to develop their navigational skills by learning about six figure grid references, compass bearings and map reading. When putting these skills into practice, the group were met with adverse weather conditions which included sleet and snow. On the second day, the pupils were required to design and plan a walk in small groups. Every pupil had the opportunity to lead the rest of the group.
The pupils completed a total of 10 miles, including various inclines and terrains. The group even had to independently navigate themselves back to the Storey Arms campus during the night time.
A special thanks must go to Mr Stamp from the Geography department who offered his services for the weekend.
