Welcome to our Transition Page!
We are so pleased that you have chosen or are considering joining our school.
We know both parents and students may be a little nervous about the move from primary to secondary school, especially under the current circumstances, this is perfectly natural.
At Eastern High we make every effort to make settling in as easy as possible and the process starts as soon as a student is offered a place. The heart of this support revolves around our House System and the staff that are linked to it. At Eastern High we have four houses and every member of our community, staff and students belong to one of our four houses.
Our Houses are Ty Coch, Ty Melyn, Ty Glas and Ty Gwyrdd. Each House has 12 Learning Families (so 48 Learning Families in total! - We have this number as it allows us to keep the groups small so everyone can get to know each other!) which are made up of students from Year 7 to Year 11. We have been running this vertical tutoring system now for a number of years and it works really well. Students within the learning families are different ages and are able to offer each other support and advice and it means the new students in Year 7 get to know the older students rather than worrying about them being the 'big ones'!
Each Learning Family has two tutors attached to the group. So our students have two key adults that they see twice a day to talk to if they have any questions, worries or need some reassurance. We value positive relationships at Eastern, and the Learning Families give everyone the opportunity to build up some key relationships straight away. Students also remain in the same learning family throughout their time with us, all the way up to Year 11. We find this consistency is helpful for students and their families.
As well as this support, each House has a House Leader who looks at the academic progress and leads the ethos of the House and the School as a whole, a House Manager and a designated House Support Officer who are full time wellbeing staff who are there to support the students and parents with any questions, or concerns and to monitor how the students are settling in.
We also ensure that siblings are in the same House so that parents can develop their relationship with the House Leaders, Manager and Support Officers. Although we do ensure that siblings have their own separate Learning Family to ensure they have their own space and identity.
We have just completed the process of allocating our new Year 6 into 7 students to their House and Learning Family groups and this will be shared with our new students and their families shortly.
