We’re in the middle of exams now and if you’re the parent of a Year 11 student like I am, then I hope all is calm at home. This is my third child to go through their GCSEs and so I know it is not an easy time for parents. Occasionally one of us has been allowed to help with a bit of work that our child may be stuck on, but I’ve yet to have an offer of help from me accepted.
We’ve realised through trial and error (a lot of error!) that we just have to stand back and hope the revision is going well. And so we’re reduced to a lot of treading on eggshells and gentle encouragement to go and revise rather than stare at a phone for hours on end. I think we’re winning - the house is still in one piece and we’re all speaking to each other.
I guess what I’m saying is, try to avoid putting too much pressure on your child, they need reminding to revise (I think they expect that from a parent), but also need space. It’s a stressful time for them all including yourself.
